In my defense, several delightfully unexpected things came up that consumed a lot of my time. Namely, the InStyle mention and the West Elm + Etsy show. So I feel like I get a little leeway in that respect. 8 for 12 ain't bad.

West Elm + Etsy

Good news, I've been invited to participate in a handmade show at the new West Elm store in downtown Seattle (Westlake & Denny) on December 1st. There will be four other Seattle-based Etsians and me! How lucky am I? Each artist gets to set up all their wares in the store for one evening, and there will be free drinks and snacks and such. It sounds super fun, not to mention a great way to support the arts and community.

This means I've been super busy getting things ready. As you can see above, journals are back - new and improved. Lots of new ideas a-brewing at chez Sidney. Most items won't be available in my Etsy shop until after the show, for obvious reasons.

Apparently, every single one of their stores will be hosting this event on this day so find your nearest West Elm and go! Go forth... and purchase. From the little people.

If you're in Seattle, come say hello on December 1st from 6-9pm at West Elm.

I've decided that I'm going to reupholster my couch MYSELF before the year is up. I have this little Danish-inspired love seat from the 50s that would look fabulous in a color similar to these (try to envision them without the ugly pillows):

While it is the only couch in my tiny apartment right now, it will become a "statement piece" when I eventually dwell in something larger. I was leaning towards linen but I think a velour would work as well. I'll probably just end up buying what I can afford. Cross your fingers this doesn't turn into a disaster.

When I was in like 4th grade I semi-faked an eye exam because I really wanted glasses. My first pair were lavender and had strawberries on the sides. My second pair were peachish-pink, and they looked like this:

I've probably posted this before but it's so good it's definitely worth another run. Plus, it reminds me of how far I've come. But that is not what this post is about.

This post is about Warby Parker, an online spectacle retailer where ALL glasses are $95. Prescription ones! I recently got new frames and my insurance only covered one pair 100% in the entire store - Candies. I own a pair of Candies glasses and I actually love them, the shape is perfect for my face. Stop laughing. The Chloé ones--the ones I really wanted--would have cost me like $300 out of pocket, which, as we all know, are made of the same damn materials. Financially I can't support that.

For every frame purchased at Warby Parker, they donate a frame to someone in need. And they will ship you three pairs to try on at home before you decide. You can also can try them on virtually, like this:

I finally got my sewing machine back from the shop and have been feeling super creative. It's just hard to find the time to get everything done. Here are the latest and greatest, all available in my Etsy shop.

I bought a bunch of mostly ugly canvas paintings from various thrift stores and made them into zipper pouches. I am particularly fond of these one-of-a-kind gems, each with two different sides. There are seven total available, and hopefully more on the way.

Slouchy bag in soft grey, lined with a leaf-like linen print I bought from some woman off Craigslist who used to make women's suits for Nordstrom. Random! My favorite part about this bag is the tiny bit of gold peaking out at the handles. It's super roomy as well.

Fold-over clutch in soft brown leather and lined in fabric I picked up in Mazatlan, Mexico several years ago. I'm really happy to put that floral print to good use.

It's so hard to find good fabric these days. Everything is all cutesy and cookie-cutter. I opted for for this muted geometric print I found in the upholstery section, and added bright teal for contrast. It's my favorite.

Though these decor/lifestyle/design magazines are all very good (and definitely worth a quick scroll-through if nothing else), I still have mixed feelings about the digital variety. I love the lack of paper waste a lot and the fact that they are free, but to be able to hold something and physically turn the pages is really something.

I just got home to the loveliest package on my doorstep. I've been so excited to try Sweet Petula's new scents, such as Bourbon & Tahitian Vanilla. Um, is it soap or a delicious cocktail? I am going to take a nice long bath later and try not to drink the water.

Pretty packaging, no? I'd also like to add that I think I ordered like four soaps and wound up with nine. Just sayin'. Thank you, sweet friend!

I'm on a train to Portland at the moment and I'd just like to point out that it is nothing like Some Like It Hot. SJP was right. Anyways, I've decided to take "advantage" of the ridiculously slow yet free wifi onboard and take stock of my Etsy career. You've probably noticed I'm getting back into it and it feels so right. Like when you find your favorite threadbare t-shirt in the back of your closet and it fits and flatters your curves, even if you don't have any.

The first item I ever sold on Etsy, May 31st, 2006. My shop had been open for several months but I hadn't spent a lot time with it. Was still wondering if this Etsy business would amount to anything, because no one I knew had even heard of it.

Then there were more. A lot more. I still swear the main reason people bought these was because of that dern rubber seal. I have no idea how I came up with that, it just popped into my head one day. But it is genius. (Note: I had to look up how to spell genius.)

This is the last set I ever made, sold a few months ago. This set is made from the very wallpaper that is presently on my parents' bedroom walls, and has been for the last 30 years. I just marched right in there with my exacto knife and straight edge and helped myself to four 4" squares. Big supporters of the arts they are. KIDDING.

I can't tell you how many bandaids I went through in making these coasters. Like I'm surprised I still have fingers left. I just don't have the facilities to continue making these. I feel like they had a good run. RIP vintage scarf coasters.

Next up, coffee sack bags. Man, these were popular, and I mean popular. I was popular. There was a time where I couldn't even keep up. These started to sell within an hour of posting(!). I guess they are kinda neat but they were a pain in the a$$ to make. My studio was one. huge. mess. Those little burlap threads would find their way onto my clothes, into my keyboard, on my pillow, in my teeth...

I love these little mirrors and would totally keep making them but the manufacturer of the wooden discs I use can't make consistent 2" diameter circles. The mirrors however, are consistently 2" diameter circles. See what I mean? Lame. Though it's been a few years so perhaps I'll give it another go.

So there it is. Things I don't sell anymore. In just under five years I've had 521 sales. Just remember you heard it from me first. [winks]

I've been looking for a new commuter mug since my old one jumped off the top of my car and swan dived into the pavement (that little rascal). The tricky part about finding a new one is A. not just any coffee mug will do, and B. it's difficult to find them in a small size, like less than 12 ounces.

And then I found this 9-ounce guy on Amazon.com in my favorite color. As it turns out, this Yedi company makes all kinds of cute dishes.

Anatomy of my closet

I spent some time this weekend going through my closet and getting rid of stuff I don't wear. I find this ridiculously rewarding. Partly because it rarely stops at my closet. After examining every article in here, I might then wander into my bathroom, then bathroom closet, then bookshelf, etc... and before I know it there are piles of unused, unwanted crap ready to take a mandatory skeedaddle. It's like having beer and Mexican food, and then brushing your teeth. (Just go with with it.)

Let's be real, this post is less about purging unwanted items from my life and more about wardrobe honesty. Please don't judge me.

1. Pants I bought many years ago back in my fat days as a token of motivation to lose weight. I still keep them around because I figure if I can still get in them, I'm doing alright. (Note: I can still get them - score!)

2. Jeans I never wear but think I might. I only say this because I spent a lot of money on them.

3. Old UW gymnastics sweatshirts I can't seem to get rid of. Sentimental value I guess. I don't even look back on those days fondly but I still feel the need to retain something tangible... for the grandkids (?).

4. Sweatshirts I sometimes wear around the pad but rarely out.

5. Jeans I sometimes wear.

6. Jeans I wear all the time.

7. Workout pants.

8. Tank top problem. I am addicted to tank tops. When I find a great-fitting one, I buy five even if I already have five of that same color of another brand that also fit well. However, I think I wear one six out of seven days per week so it's not like they're collecting dust. Plus, they wear out quickly.

9. Belts. (Just realized I didn't go through these... I probably wear only two or three out of ten.)

10. Skirts on probation. I rarely wear skirts because I find it difficult to find ones that flatter my figure. Skirts are dresses shorter, awkward cousin in my book. Though sometimes they come in mighty handy when it's hot out, so they get to stay through next Summer if I wear them. If it will actually get hot out.

11. Fancy dresses, including three LBDs. I rarely find the occasion to wear these but it's good to know they're there if I need 'em. Like State Farm.

12. Casual dresses I wear regularly.

13. Tops I wear regularly.

14. Tops on probation. These are items I like but never wear so I'm giving them a month. If I wear them before December 15th, they get to stay.

15. Summer robe and winter robe. They like to hang out together.

16. Shoe problem (not shown; story for another day).

How I spent my evening

Terrible apartment lighting = terrible pictures. These are a little tricky to make but I think I got it down. Very excited about these. This one is pretty little, about 6" x 4" and the interior is an old scarf. Remember how I used to make things out of old scarves? I'm going to start doing that again.

Tackling a kiss-lock clutch was on my list of things to do this year. Check.

Allsaints Spitalfield, a London-based retailer that I had never heard of until tonight, is opening a store on the corner of 5th and Pine in downtown Seattle in what used to be the space of Coldwater Creek. Talk about a step in the right direction(!). As of this evening there are about 500 hundred vintage sewing machines in the windows and super-cute merchandise in every shade of black, grey, brown, and white piling up on the shelves behind it. All my favorite colours! Please note how unabashedly I spelled the word 'colours'. Practically British.

If someone were to twist my arm, force me to pick out things... for free. I would be like, gosh, fine. BOSSY. But I would do it.

We Are Fucking Awesome is a cool place for cool artists to post cool art. I am enamored by this collage book which has been passed back and forth between three Seattlites (I think). The pages were deconstructed, reconstructed, had things added/subtracted, etc... I like the idea of letting go of your perceived outcome and surrending yourself to the possibilities.

If someone wants to do this with me, I would probably say yes.

I found this video via A Cup Of Joe the other day and I am just in love with this song by Icelander Emiliana Torrini. In fact, I decided to buy the whole album. Think: Madeleine Peyroux meets Antje Duvekot. Most of the other songs are much slower, however. As if I need another reason to visit Iceland - isn't it beautiful?!

I just got back from Kooza - one of Cirque de Soleil's traveling shows and presently in Seattle. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The Wheel of Death... holy cow batman. Their performances are so beautiful every way you look at them. Just go.

The weekend

I had to cancel my plans to go camping in the San Juan Islands this weekend.

SAD.

However, I am still excited about sleeping in for three days and getting a lot of homework done. A lot. In other words, I am making the responsible choice... as I am wont to do.

This evening's plans include this:

Grilled cheese sandwich with sauteed apples, which I found via She Eats Bears - a great little food blog. I added a link on the right under "Yum" for your convenience. It's been a while since I've used my kitchen but I think I can pull it off. My guest hopes so anyways. Cross your fingers. Wink.

It's also the Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center (my immediate neighbor) so at some point I'll have to meander on over and find a drum circle and a scone. Maybe a hug a tree or something.

It reminds me a little of Cafe Presse here in Seattle (third pic), one of my favorite haunts due to a variety of factors including, but not limited to, chocolate on toast, their magazine rack, and the lack of judgement when ordering adult beverages before noon.

I recently stole borrowed these old airline ticket jackets from work. I love the simple logos and one color-on-white theme, very circa 1980s. How sad that we don't get to carry these around anymore. I have no idea what to do with them at the moment but I know that in time it will make me famous.
